Assembly:
The warm breezes and enchanting sounds of the Mediterranean call as Musicantica offers beautiful traditional folk music from Southern Italy. Roberto Catalano and Enzo Fina share music and folk fables passed on from generation to generation by the fishermen, peasants and street vendors whose music filled the villages and streets of their homeland. Both members of the duo are master musicians: Roberto Catalano (guitar, chitarra battente, mandolin, bouzouki, jaws harp, benas, putip, frame drum and percussion) was born in Catania, Sicily, where he began his music career as a self-taught guitarist in 1973. A scholar, teacher, composer, and multi-instrumentalist who holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA, he is also a collector and maker of musical instruments. Enzo Fina (frame drums, fina, guitar, mandolin, percussion, putip, jaws harp, flutes) was born in Salice, Lecce, Italy and holds a degree in painting at the State Institute of Art and Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Lecce. He works as a musician in residence at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles.
Many of the instruments used by Musicantica are traditional instruments from Italy. These include the tamburieddhru, a frame drum used for the pizzica tarantata dance; the putip, a friction drum; the chitarra battente, a 10 strings guitar from the Renaissance; percussion such as castanets, animal jingle collars, sheep copper bells; the benas, a single and double Sardinian reed clarinet or the marranzanu, or jaw harp. Other instruments played include classical guitars, the mandolin, the mandola, the Greek bouzouki, the fina, a lamellaphone inspired by the African mbira exclusively created by Maestro Enzo Fina, and other homemade sound effects.
